ASSIGNMENT 2
SEMESTER 2 2026

, EML1501 - EMERGENT LITERACY

ASSESSMENT 4 PORTFOLIO 2026

QUESTION 1 [30]

1.1 In your own words, briefly describe the literacy state of Lesedi. (5)

Lesedi is demonstrating several important emergent literacy skills that are appropriate
for a three-year-old child. He understands that books contain meaning and uses
pictures to construct and communicate meaning. His ability to answer his mother's
questions about the book shows that he has developed listening and comprehension
skills. He also engages in pretend school, which shows an awareness of literacy
activities. His scribbling and naming of his drawings demonstrate that he is beginning to
understand that marks and drawings can communicate ideas. Overall, Lesedi is
progressing through the early stages of emergent literacy.

1.2 In your own view, in what way does Lesedi’s home background influence his
literacy state? (5)

Lesedi's home environment has both challenges and opportunities for literacy
development. The family's limited financial resources mean that he does not have
access to formal preschool education, educational toys or many literacy resources.
However, his interaction with his mother and sister provides valuable opportunities for
language development. Playing school with Mpho exposes him to concepts related to
reading and schooling. His mother's questions, encouragement and praise also
motivate him to communicate and experiment with drawing. Therefore, although the
home has limited material resources, supportive family interaction contributes positively
to his emergent literacy development.
