PURPOSE AND PERSPECTIVE OF THE CHAPTER
Chapter 1 provides a broad overview of the professional competencies that electricians will need to
develop to work safely in commercial settings and comply with national and local codes. Students are
also introduced to the importance of using the textbook, the NEC, and the project plans together to
connect code requirements to real-world commercial installations. This chapter addresses the following
foundational knowledge areas:
1. The chapter begins with a thorough discussion of workplace safety practices as the most
important skills an electrician will develop.
2. The chapter then introduces students to typical commercial building specs and working drawings,
including BIM.
3. Students will receive an orientation to important codes and standards organizations, with an
emphasis on how to locate and navigate these important resources
4. Finally, the chapter discusses the NEC’s use of the International System of Units (SI), or metric
system.
CHAPTER OBJECTIVES
After studying this chapter, students should be able to:
outline the basic safety rules for working on electrical systems.
explain how electricians use contract documents to define project requirements.
discuss the use of building plans and building information modeling (BIM) to organize
specifications.
explain the process for updating the NEC.
explain how the NEC is organized and how the articles relate.
obtain information from industry-related organizations.
convert units of measure between the English Customary System and the International System of
Units (SI).
access and effectively use both the NEC Table of Contents and the Index to navigate through the
NEC and locate the appropriate Articles, Sections, and Subsections.
locate specific information on architectural working drawings (including drafting symbols, site
plan elevations, building cross sections, and electrical plans), including recognizing symbols for
plumbing and sheet metal ductwork.
