PURPOSE AND PERSPECTIVE OF THE CHAPTER
This chapter describes research as a process strongly influenced by context, highlighting how the author,
audience, purpose, and method of delivery determine the way information is collected, analyzed, and
communicated. It stresses that research is not limited to academic assignments but a part of daily life,
influencing personal decisions, workplace challenges, and professional growth.
By showing how people constantly conduct research, whether choosing a doctor, applying for a scholarship,
or solving a problem at work, the chapter highlights the practical and dynamic nature of research. It also
demonstrates that research approaches vary across academic disciplines, each with its own conventions,
methods, and standards for communication which learners must recognize and adapt.
Finally, the chapter presents research as an ongoing conversation: before contributing new insights,
researchers must first “listen” to what has already been said, understand disciplinary expectations, and then
position their own voice within the broader dialogue.
