Suggestions for Use of Class Time
Chapter 1 can be covered fairly easily and effectively in one class period (or about 50–75
minutes). Activity 1.1 is a good way to begin a discussion of the relevance of
psychological testing. Activity 1.2, a trivia or Jeopardy-style review game , is an especially
effective and engaging way of addressing much of the content in this introductory
chapter. Finally, Activity 1.3 and Activity 1.4 can be used to supplement a lecture on the
history of psychological testing.

Activities

Activity 1.1: Contemporary uses of psychological tests
Materials needed: none

Time required: 15–20 minutes

Addresses chapter objective: 1-9

Teaches: the pervasiveness of psychological tests; reasons for the use of psychological
tests

Description: This activity asks students to consider reasons why psychological tests are
used in specific settings. In a single column on the board, write Psychiatric
Hospitals/Clinics, General Medical Hospitals/Clinics, Family/Child Guidance Centers,
Elementary/High Schools, Colleges/Universities, Criminal/Civil Courts, and
Businesses/Industries. Next, ask students to generate at least two reasons why
psychological tests might be administered in each of the settings listed . This could also
be framed as questions the tests might help to answer in each setting . Generation of
reasons (or questions to be answered) could be done individually, in think -pair-share , or
in small groups. After students have been given 10 minutes to generate reasons , ask for
examples and write them on the board next to each setting. If some important
examples/reasons are missing, instructors can supply them. Students might be surprised at
the extent to which psychological tests are ubiquitous in the contemporary world .

Activity 1.2: Psychological Testing Jeopardy!

Materials needed: sample Jeopardy! items are provided below: chalk, overhead pens, or
whiteboard markers in various colors and pads of blank paper are also needed ;
