WGU C108 TASK 1| ELEMENTARY SCIENCE METHODS| 2026 WITH
COMPLETE SOLUTIONS
Task 1 – Lesson Plan
Brianna Hatcher
C108 – Elementary Science Methods
Instructor Megan Rzyski
, A. Lesson Plan
General Information
Lesson Title: Exploring Plant Needs for Growth
Subject: Life Science
Grade/Level/Setting: Kindergarten / groups / classroom
Prior Knowledge:
Students already understand what plants are and their basic functions, i.e. vegetation for food.
Standards & Objectives
Colorado Standards & Objectives (pg. 18)
SC.K.2.1. Students can use the full range of science and engineering practices to make sense of natural
phenomena and solve problems that require understanding how individual organisms are configured and
how these structures function to support life, growth, behavior and reproduction.
a. Students can use observations to describe patterns of what plants and animals (including
humans) need to survive. (K-LS1-1)
Learning Objective(s):
By the conclusion of the lesson, students should be able to observe the effects of different environmental
factors on plant growth (behavior), and use that learning to predict how changing particular factors (i.e.
light source/amount, types of soil, temperature, etc) will impact progression of plant growth (condition).
Students will be able to record accurate plant measurements (such as height, quantity of leaves) over a
period of two weeks (measurable criterion).
Materials Technology
• Plant seeds (sunflower, green bean, basil) • Tablets with cameras to document plant
• Soil (sandy soil, manure soil, clay soil) growth
• Plastic plant pots • Laptops or desktop computer with
• Light sources (lamps, natural light, or a closet PowerPoint.
for no light)
• Thermometer
• Ruler
• Worksheets to document findings
Language Demands
Language Function(s):
Students will make descriptive observations regarding plant growth given specific factors. Then students
will compare results with peer groups so they can clarify their findings. Lastly, given their learning,
students will predict how specific factors impact plant growth in general (more light, different soil, etc.).
