Lab Exercise A: Transgenic Flies
In this lab you will make transgenic Drosophila flies using molecular biology techniques. Go to lab site.
(You will need to make sure Adobe Shockwave plugin is installed on your computer so the lab will run
correctly.)
Click on "Start Virtual Lab" and start with the instructions on “Make Transgenic Flies”. Complete the
lab by “Click to enter the lab”. Follow the steps and prompts, answering all questions when directed.
After you have completed all the labs and questions, switch to the “Use Transgenic Flies” lab
experiments (tabs at the bottom of the lab). Complete Experiments 1, 2, and 3 and complete all
questions. Concentrate on increasing your comprehension of making and using transgenic organisms.
When you have completed the lab in its entirety, you will see a screen pop up with your lab data titled,
"Experiment 3: Graph Analysis." Follow the instructions on that screen and fill in the data in the tables
, provided using the graph you generated. You will need to then take a screenshot of this window
showing your completed tables, paste it into a document and save it in PDF format, and upload it in
the appropriate place as indicated below.
Question 1 of 20
3.0/ 3.0 Points
In this experiment, the reporter gene
A. tells the experimenter exactly how much of the native protein was produced
B. must be from the same type of organism as the organism into which it is being
transferred
C. changes the color of the flies' eyes
D. is designed to be easily detected and reflect the activity of the native gene
Feedback:Good. Reporter genes are designed to be easily measured and quantified, either by eye
or by machines.
Question 2 of 20
3.0/ 3.0 Points
After successfully incorporating into the genome of a fly, the construct DNA will
A. cause the eyes to be white
