She enjoys school and is looking forward to pursuing tertiary studies. She works very hard to attain good marks in all of her subjects. Recently, she has been feeling uncomfortable in the presence of one of her teachers, Mr Ryan. Mr Ryan makes inappropriate jokes about women’s sexuality and sexual relationships. He often jokes that girls should stick to looking pretty and baking biscuits and stop trying to be good at mathematics. He often stands too close to female learners when he explains something to them, touching their shoulders or their hair, and calling them “baby”. Sarah is especially worried about how Mr Ryan reacted when one of her fellow learners asked him not to touch her hair. The fellow learner’s marks started to drop without any apparent reason. Mr Ryan is also more sarcastic and ruder towards this learner and has recently started to make humiliating jokes about her. Mr Ryan is very friendly towards Sarah. This makes Sarah extremely anxious as she fears that her grades may also drop if she dismisses him or stands up for herself by expressing her dissatisfaction. 2.1 Evaluate the following statements by either agreeing or disagreeing. Provide at least two reasons for agreeing or disagreeing by citing information from the case study to substantiate your answer. Marks are awarded as follows: Agree or Disagree: No marks are awarded for agreeing or disagreeing, marks are only awarded for the justification or reason. Reason/ substantiation: 2 x 2=4 marks (2 marks per reason) 2.1.1 Sarah’s anxiety and concern are unnecessary – from the case study it is clear that Mr Ryan is just being friendly and polite. (4) 2.1.2 Mr Ryan is exercising “authority with compassion”, as per the SACE Code for Professional Ethics. (4) 2.1.3 Mr Ryan has violated the SACE Code for Professional Ethics that requires him to promote gender equality, in his conduct towards learners. (4) (12 marks) 7 2.2 Question 2.2 is also based on the given case study. Discuss at least five (5) specific violations of the SACE Code of Ethics that Mr Ryan may be guilty of. Explain what he did (1 mark) and cite from the SACE Code for Professional Ethics, the section on Conduct: The Educator and the Learner to substantiate your answer (1 mark). Draw a table with Mr Ryan’s action (what he did) in column 1 and the violated code (SACE Code of Ethics) in column 2. Do not repeat the examples. Mr Ryan’s action Code that he violated Example 1: He abused his authority by possibly lowering a learner’s marks after the learner asked him to respect her personal space. An educator: “exercises authority with compassion” Example 2: He expressed gender stereotyping / chauvinism by joking about women’s sexuality and “…promotes gender equality” their ability to do mathematics. 2.2.1 2.2.2 2.2.3 2.2.4 2.2.5 (2 x 5 =10 marks) 2.3 This question is based on the picture on the next page.
