GEOGRAPHY PROJECT
Topic: Trees and Their Importance

Introduction
Trees are an essential part of the natural environment. They are large plants with a woody
stem, branches and leaves. Trees grow in forests, grasslands, mountains, deserts and
along rivers. Different regions have different kinds of trees because climate, soil, rainfall
and temperature affect their growth. In geography, trees are important because they
influence the landscape, climate, soil, water cycle and the lives of people and animals.

Trees and the Environment
Trees absorb carbon dioxide from the air and release oxygen during photosynthesis. They
provide shade, cool the surroundings and help reduce the effects of heat. Their leaves trap
some dust and their roots hold soil in place. Trees also offer food and shelter to birds,
insects, mammals and many other living organisms. A large area covered with trees is
called a forest, and forests are among Earth’s most valuable natural resources.

Why Trees Matter in Geography
The distribution of trees tells us about the physical conditions of a place. Dense evergreen
forests are common in warm, wet regions, while thorny trees are adapted to dry areas.
Coniferous trees such as pine and fir grow in many cold mountainous regions. Studying
trees helps geographers understand ecosystems, natural resources and the relationship
between people and their environment.
