TASK 1: THE TEACHER AS A REFLECTIVE PRACTITIONER

Discuss your teaching philosophy (20 marks)

1.1 Critically explain three core teaching beliefs with relevant citations (9 marks)

Belief 1: Learners construct knowledge through active participation.

I believe that learners understand concepts more effectively when they actively
participate in discussions, practical activities and problem-solving rather than merely
memorising information. This belief is consistent with constructivist theory, which
explains that learners develop understanding by connecting new information with their
existing knowledge and experiences (Vygotsky, 1978).

Belief 2: Every learner deserves inclusive and equitable education.

I believe that all learners, regardless of their abilities, language, culture, gender or
socioeconomic background, should receive meaningful opportunities to learn and
demonstrate their potential. This belief is supported by inclusive education principles,
which emphasise identifying and removing barriers to participation and learning for all
learners (UNESCO, 2020).

Belief 3: Teaching should encourage critical thinking and independent learning.

I believe that education should enable learners to question information, analyse
problems, express their opinions and develop solutions instead of simply accepting
what the teacher says. Freire (2000) supports this approach by criticising the passive
transmission of knowledge and advocating dialogue and critical reflection in education.

1.2 Evaluate how these beliefs influence classroom decisions and practices (11
marks)

1. Active participation influences teaching methods.
