Sport-for-development in Soccer
Module Summary
Role of Sport
According to the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, sport
serves as a key driver for sustainable development and peace by promoting tolerance
and respect. It contributes directly to the empowerment of women, young people,
individuals, and entire communities while supporting vital public goals related to health,
education, and social inclusion.
What is Sport-for-Development
Sport-for-Development (SFD) refers to using sport as an intentional tool to positively
influence public health, encourage social inclusion, drive economic growth, promote
cultural exchange, and resolve community conflicts. To achieve these social outcomes
successfully, event managers need structured strategic frameworks and operational
models that help them plan, manage, and extend the positive impact of sport projects
across broader social norms.
Sport-for-Development Theory
Effective SFD programming relies on five core components, which can be easily
remembered using the acronym IOSEC:
● Impacts Assessment (evaluating short-term and long-term project outcomes)
● Organizational Structure (managing project operations and logistics)
● Sport and Physical Activity (delivering the core athletic games and training)
● Educational Integration (teaching life skills, health, and positive values)
● Cultural Enrichment (promoting mutual respect and intercultural exchange)
