ASSIGNMENT 06 (Portfolio) 28 October 2026 Total: 100 Marks Instructions This portfolio assesses not only what you know about Inclusive Education, but also whether you can translate knowledge into practical advice, learner support, classroom teaching, professional communication, and school-based inclusive practice. You are expected to demonstrate what an inclusive teacher would do, rather than merely describe theoretical concepts. Portfolio products that you must submit By completing the following two questions, you will produce evidence of professional competence through: - a media briefing - a PowerPoint presentation - a professional letter - an inclusive Mathematics lesson plan - a Teaching Practice reflection - a TikTok educational script - a Facebook awareness post - a short teacher-training manual - an Individual Support Plan - an Inclusive Education policy briefing - a practical curriculum differentiation demonstration note. 5 ASSIGNMENT 6 IFP QUESTION 1 (50 MARKS) MATHEMATICS BARRIERS AND INCLUSIVE SUPPORT IN THE FOUNDATION PHASE Scenario Your school has become concerned about poor performance in Mathematics in the Foundation Phase. Teachers report that some learners struggle to understand basic number concepts, mathematical language, sequencing, problem-solving, and the use of mathematical symbols. Some learners become anxious or withdraw during Mathematics activities. The School-Based Support Team (SBST) has asked you, as a newly qualified Foundation Phase teacher with knowledge of Inclusive Education, to help the school understand and address barriers to learning in Mathematics. Complete the following portfolio activities. 1.1 Media briefing for teachers Using the knowledge you have acquired in IFP3701 on Mathematics barriers in the Foundation Phase, prepare a one-page media-style briefing entitled: “Every Learner Can Learn Mathematics: Understanding Barriers in the Foundation Phase.” Your briefing must: a) Explain the meaning of a barrier to learning within the context of Inclusive Education. (2) b) Identify three barriers to Mathematics learning. (3) c) Briefly explain how each of the three barriers may negatively affect Mathematics learning and participation in the Foundation Phase. (3) d) Provide a two-sentence message advising schools not to view learners experiencing Mathematics difficulties as incapable of learning. (2) [10 marks] 6 ASSIGNMENT 6 IFP 1.2 PowerPoint presentation: Teacher development The principal asks you to conduct a short professional development session for Foundation Phase teachers. Prepare the content for a 5-slide PowerPoint presentation entitled: “Teaching Mathematics Inclusively: From Barriers to Participation.” NB. Each slide should contain concise, presentation-ready information, not long paragraphs. You should have only 6 points per slide. Each point must not exceed 3 words. You are allowed to include figures, tables, arrows, etc., on your slides. Your slides should cover: Slide 1: Meaning of inclusive Mathematics teaching. (2) Slide 2: How inadequate teacher training can contribute to poor Mathematics performance. (2) Slide 3: Three signs that may alert a teacher that a learner is experiencing a Mathematics barrier. (2) Slide 4: Four practical inclusive strategies teachers can use. (2) Slide 5: Three recommendations for continuous professional development of Foundation Phase Mathematics teachers. (2) [10 marks] 1.3 Letter of professional advice to the school principal Write a professional letter of approximately 250 - 300 words to the school principal. In the letter: - Explain why mathematical difficulties should not automatically be regarded as a problem located within the learner. (2) - Identify a factor that may create or intensify Mathematics barriers. (2) - Recommend an action the school could implement to improve inclusive Mathematics teaching. (2) - Explain briefly how the SBST could support teachers and learners. (2) 7 ASSIGNMENT 6 IFP [8 marks] 1.4 Inclusive Mathematics lesson plan Design a Foundation Phase Mathematics lesson plan for a grade of your choice. Select one topic, for example: - number concepts - addition and subtraction - patterns - measurement - shapes - place value - problem-solving. Your lesson plan must show: a) Grade, topic, and learning objective (2) b) Possible barriers that learners may experience during the lesson (2) c) Differentiated teaching methods for learners with different levels of readiness(3) d) Differentiated learning materials/resources (2) e) Two learner-support strategies (2) f) One inclusive assessment strategy (1) Your lesson should demonstrate that all learners work towards meaningful learning, although they may receive different levels and forms of support. [12 marks] 1.5 Reflective Teaching Practice voice Your Teaching Practice period is an important opportunity for professional learning. Write a reflective piece entitled: “The Teacher I Am Becoming: Learning to Address Mathematics Barriers During Teaching Practice.” In approximately 300 - 400 words, explain: - What you learned during Teaching Practice about learner diversity. (2) 8 ASSIGNMENT 6 IFP - One Mathematics barrier that you observed or could realistically encounter. (2) - How an inclusive teacher could respond to this barrier. (2) - How collaboration with the mentor teacher, SBST, or other professionals could improve learner support. (2) - How Teaching Practice contributes to your continuous professional development as a future inclusive Foundation Phase teacher. (2) Your reflection should demonstrate professional learning rather than simply describe what happened during Teaching Practice. [10 marks] QUESTION 2 (50 MARKS) READING BARRIERS, LEARNER SUPPORT, POLICY, AND CURRICULUM DIFFERENTIATION Scenario During a Grade 2 reading lesson, you notice that some learners read slowly, confuse sounds and words, struggle to understand what they have read, or avoid reading aloud. One learner frequently looks down when asked to read and says, “I cannot read.” The teacher reports that the learner is also struggling with written activities. The school decides that classroom intervention and additional support are needed. As a Foundation Phase teacher committed to Inclusive Education, you are asked to assist. 2.1 TikTok educational script Prepare a 60 - 90 second educational TikTok script aimed at Foundation Phase teachers. The title should be: “A Learner Who Struggles to Read Is Still a Learner Who Can Learn.” 9 ASSIGNMENT 6 IFP Your script must: - Identify three common reading difficulties experienced by Foundation Phase learners. (3) - Explain two reasons some learners may avoid reading aloud. (2) - Provide three short pieces of advice to teachers on how to protect learners' confidence and participation. (3) The language must be professional, accessible, and suitable for a short educational social-media video. [8 marks] 2.2 Facebook awareness post for parents and teachers Write a Facebook post of approximately 150 - 200 words for the school's page entitled: “Do Not Wait: Early Support Can Change a Learner's Reading Journey.” Explain: - Why early identification of reading difficulties is important (1) - Why teachers should avoid labelling learners (1) - How teachers and parents can work together (2) - Three simple ways adults can encourage reading development. (3) The post should be supportive, informative, and understandable to parents who may not have specialist knowledge of Inclusive Education. [7 marks] 2.3 Short teacher-training manual Develop a two-page mini training manual for Foundation Phase teachers entitled: “Supporting Learners Experiencing Reading Difficulties.” Use the following five headings: - Recognising possible reading barriers (2) - Creating an emotionally safe reading classroom (2) - Inclusive teaching strategies (2) - Supporting reading confidence (2) 10 ASSIGNMENT 6 IFP - Monitoring learner progress (2) Under these headings, provide practical guidance on strategies such as: - phonological awareness - phonics - vocabulary development - repeated reading - paired or small group reading - visual support - modelling - scaffolding - graded texts
