2.3 The Aristotelian-Medieval Worldview
De rol van de Rooms-Katholieke kerk in de middeleeuwen
 Tijdens de middeleeuwen was de kerk de dominante kracht in het leven van Europa
 Voor de ontwikkeling van de moderne wetenschap werden vragen over de realiteit
beantwoord door Aristoteles en/of de bijbel
Het Aristotelische kosmologische model
 De structuur van het universum bestond volgens Aristoteles uit twee fundamentele rijken
o Superlunaire (hemelse) sfeer
 Van de maan en verder
 Alles is eeuwig, onveranderlijk en perfect
 Objecten bewegen in perfecte uniforme cirkels
 Samengesteld uit een vijfde element quinta essentia (of aether), een zuivere,
onzichtbare, glasachtige substantie
o Sublunaire (aardse) sfeer
 Tussen de aarde en de maan
 Alles is veranderlijk, bederfelijk en onderhevig aan groei en verval
 Objecten bewegen in rechte lijnen
 Samengesteld uit aarde (zwaar, valt naar het midden van het universum),
water(zwaar, maar minder dan aarde), lucht (licht en stijgt op), vuur (zeer
licht, stijgt naar de buitenrand van de sublunaire sfeer)
 Beweging in de sublunaire wereld
o Objecten in de sublunaire wereld hebben een natuurlijke plaats
 Aarde en water vallen naar het midden van het universum
 Lucht en vuur stijgen naar de buitenrand van de sublunaire sfeer
o Natuurlijke beweging = objecten bewegen van nature naar hun natuurlijke plaats
Ptolemaeus en het geocentrische model
 Claudius Ptolemaeus (ca. 100–170 n.Chr.)
o Een Grieks-Egyptische wiskundige en astronoom die werkte in Alexandrië
o Zijn werk Almagest (oorspronkelijk Mathematische Syntaxis) was de standaard
astronomische tekst tot de 16e eeuw
o Geocentrisch model
 De aarde staat motionless in het centrum van het universum
 Planeten, zon en maan draaien in cirkelbanen om de aarde
 Om de retrograde beweging (schijnbare achterwaartse beweging) van
planeten te verklaren, introduceerde Ptolemaeus epicycli
 Planeten bewogen in kleine cirkels (epicycli), terwijl het centrum van
die cirkels zelf in een grote cirkel (deferent) om de aarde bewoog
 Integratie met Christelijk Denken
o Thomas van Aquino (1225–1274) combineerde het Aristotelische en Ptolemaeïsche
wereldbeeld met christelijke theologie
o Dit geocentrische wereldbeeld domineerde het westerse denken tot de 16e eeuw
