MARKET-DAY ENTERPRISE PLAN

Introduction

Entrepreneurship education plays an important role in helping learners understand how
businesses are created, managed and developed. Entrepreneurship is not only about
starting a business and making money. It also involves identifying opportunities, solving
problems, taking calculated risks, making decisions, managing resources and understanding
the needs of customers. A school Market Day provides an opportunity for learners to
experience these processes in a practical and meaningful way. Instead of only learning
definitions from a textbook, learners can apply concepts such as production, income,
expenditure, profit, pricing, marketing and financial management in a real situation.

For this Market-Day Enterprise Plan, I have selected a realistic public primary-school context
in KwaZulu-Natal. The school has approximately 500 learners from Grade 4 to Grade 7. The
school also has teaching and administrative staff and serves a community consisting mainly
of working-class and middle-income families. The school has decided to organise a Market
Day during the second term. Learners will work in small groups and will be responsible for
planning and operating small enterprises under the supervision of their teachers.

The business idea selected for the Market Day is a fresh fruit cup enterprise called “Fresh
Bites”. The learners will prepare and sell affordable cups containing a mixture of fresh fruit
such as apples, bananas, oranges and grapes. Each cup will be sold for R15. The business
has been selected because it is relatively simple to operate in a primary-school environment
while still providing many opportunities for learners to practise entrepreneurship and
financial management.

The activity will allow learners to experience the different stages of operating a small
enterprise. Before Market Day, they will identify their target market, conduct basic market
research, prepare a budget, purchase resources, calculate their costs and decide on a selling
price. During the event, they will market the product, communicate with customers, sell the

, fruit cups and record sales. After the event, they will calculate the actual income and profit
and evaluate what worked well and what could be improved.

The activity is consistent with the objectives of Economic and Management Sciences
because learners are expected to develop knowledge and skills that can be applied to
economic and business situations. The Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement for
Economic and Management Sciences gives attention to entrepreneurship, financial literacy,
the economy and business-related knowledge (Department of Basic Education, 2011). A
practical Market Day can therefore help learners connect classroom knowledge with real-life
economic activity.

1. Business Idea and Target Market

1.1 Business idea

The proposed business is called “ Fresh Bites ” and will sell fresh fruit cups during the
school's Market Day. Each fruit cup will contain a mixture of chopped fruit, including apples,
bananas, oranges and grapes. The fruit will be prepared shortly before the Market Day to
ensure that it remains fresh. The fruit will be placed into clear disposable cups with lids so
that the product is easy to carry and consume. Each cup will be sold for R15.

The first reason for selecting this business idea is that the product is realistic for a primary-
school Market Day. Learners do not need highly specialised equipment or complicated
technical skills to understand the production process. They can participate in different
activities such as washing fruit, sorting ingredients, counting portions, packaging the cups,
setting up the stall and serving customers. This means that learners can be involved in
different parts of the enterprise rather than simply watching an adult operate the business.

The second reason is that the product has a clearly identifiable target market. Learners
attending the Market Day are likely to want affordable snacks. A fruit cup is small enough to
be purchased as a snack and the planned price of R15 is intended to remain affordable for
the school's learners. Teachers, parents and visitors can also purchase the product.

The third reason is that the enterprise allows learners to practise financial-management
skills. The learners will need to calculate how much money is required to purchase the fruit
and other resources. They will then have to determine how many cups they need to sell to
recover their costs. This will help them understand the relationship between costs, selling
price, revenue and profit.
