MODULE 1
The Harsh Truth & Psychological
Launchpad
Dear student who just opened the slides for the first time,
Managerial accounting looks like a wall of tables. It is not. It is about seven recurring questions,
asked in slightly different clothes every year. Once you can see the question underneath the story
about snowboards or surgery rooms, the exam becomes predictable. That is what this booklet is
for.
The deal is simple. Print this booklet. Buy one clean, empty notebook. Every calculation in these
pages goes into that notebook by hand: the given data with units, the formula in symbols, every
substitution, every line of arithmetic, and one sentence saying what the number means. When you
reach the end, start again at P1.1 and keep going until the notebook is full. Accounting is learned
with the hand, not the eyes.
If you work part-time, look at your schedule until the exam. If your situation allows it, ask for a few
fewer shifts; most managers understand exam weeks. If it doesn't, that is completely fine: plenty
of students pass while working. Block two focused hours around each shift, phone in your bag,
and protect them like an appointment.
Study where people around you are working too: your university library, a public library or a quiet
study room. Sit next to someone silently solving problems and you will solve problems too.
Managerial accounting exams are usually a set of calculation problems of similar weight, with a
calculator allowed. Check your own course manual for the exact format, then plan for it: most prob‐
lems you can do on autopilot, and one you can afford to skip. After every attempt, grade yourself
with the scorecard. Be honest; the examiner will be.
You can do this. One summary, one notebook, seven question types. Let's go.

How to grade yourself
1. Only grade attempts made with the solution covered. A peeked attempt scores zero.
2. A point counts only if the proof is visibly on the page.
3. Below the pass line: redo the problem tomorrow from a blank page.
4. Write the date and score next to every attempt so you can see yourself improve.
