What is evidence based practice? 1. intergration of best available evidence (research)
2. Clinical expertise (skills and experience)
3. Patient Values and circumstances (patient preferences/ priorities)
What is the purpose of Evidence Based Practice optimize quality of patient care
what is NOT evidence based practice - googling and using the first article you read
- considering only evidence without the patient in front of you
- only being a researcher or statistician
EBP: Best available research may suggest a new way to diagnose or treat
EBP: Clinical expertise ability to use clinical skills and past experience to quickly identify each patient's
health state, diagnosis, risks and benefits associated with certain interventions
EBP: Patient values and circumstance patient preferences, concerns, experiences
also the patients individual clinical state
why do we need EBP? - Encourages critical thinking & evidence-based decisions
- Reduces medical errors & practice variation (clinicians wont treat the same
condition the same)
- Integrates into standard of care
- Closes the knowledge-to-action gap (research → practice = ~17 years
without EBP)
- Increases clinical autonomy( ability to make you own choices and decisions)
& confidence
what are the 6 steps to EBP? 1. Cultivate a spirit of inquiry (ask questions/ be curious)
2. Formulate a PICOT question (make it a specific research question)
3. Search for best evidence (that can answer your question)
4. Critically appraise the evidence (check if its trustworthy research)
5. Integrate with expertise & patient values (intergrate in your practice)
6. Evaluate effectiveness & improve (see if it actually works)
first step of EBP: Cultivating a spirit of inquiry - ongoing process of questioning and evaluating practice
- curiosity about best practice
ex: is there a better or more effective way to help my patient
what do may the questions address (1st step of EBP) - patient needs
- environment
- wellness
- effectiveness of interventions
