Module 1: Payroll - Answers - General Info:
- Companies are required by law to have payroll records for each employee, report and
remit payroll deductions, and respect laws.

2 Types of Payroll Costs - Answers - 1) Employee costs: amounts paid to employees
(gross pay) & amounts paid by employees (payroll deductions).
2) Employer costs: amounts paid by employer on behalf of the employee (employee

Note: net pay is always less than gross pay.

Gross Pay (Earnings) - The total compensation earned by an employee - Answers -

Employee Payroll Costs - the difference between gross pay and the amount actually

exemption) to a maximum amount of earnings (maximum pensionable earnings)

2) Employment Insurance (E1) contributions:
- Calculated as a % of earnings to a maximum amount (maximum insurable earnings)
- No basic exemption
- Not pro-rated: deduced from pay until max is reached.

3) Personal Income Tax Deductions:
- Based on tax rates set by federal and provincial govt's
- Progressive rates: higher % rates for higher income levels
