MC 4213 – ROBOTICS
MODULE 6
End-Effectors
Learning Objectives
• Define an end-effector.
• Identify common end-effector types.
• Select suitable end-effectors for simple tasks.
• Explain the relationship between a robotic arm and its end-effector.
6.1 Definition
An end-effector is a device attached to the end of a robotic arm that enables the robot to interact with
objects or perform a task.
6.2 Examples
Common end-effectors include mechanical grippers, suction cups, welding tools, cutting tools,
screwdrivers, drills, and painting tools.
6.3 Selection
The correct end-effector depends on the object and task. A suction cup may suit a smooth, flat surface,
while a mechanical gripper may suit a rigid object with accessible surfaces.
Activity – Short Answer
1. What is an end-effector?
2. Give three examples of end-effectors.
3. Why is end-effector selection important?
4. What end-effector could pick up a smooth, flat object using vacuum?
5. What end-effector might be used by a robotic welding system?
