MC 4213 – ROBOTICS
MODULE 4
Degrees of Freedom (DOF)
Learning Objectives
• Define degrees of freedom.
• Distinguish translational and rotational motion.
• Calculate simple robot DOF from independent joints or axes.
• Explain why DOF matters in robot design.
4.1 Definition
Degrees of Freedom (DOF) describe the number of independent movements available to a mechanism
or robot.
4.2 Motion in 3D Space
A rigid object in three-dimensional space can have three translational motions (X, Y, Z) and three
rotational motions (rotation about X, Y, Z), for a total of six independent motions.
4.3 Robot Arm Example
If a robotic arm has six independently controlled joints, its controlled DOF is commonly described as 6
DOF. The exact motion capabilities depend on the joint arrangement.
Activity – Problems
1. A robot has 4 independently controlled joints. How many controlled DOF does it have?
2. A robot can move forward/backward, left/right, and up/down. How many translational DOF does it
have?
3. A robotic arm has six independently controlled axes. What is its DOF?
4. Explain why a robot with more DOF can generally perform a wider range of positioning and
orientation tasks.
