• Purpose for suctioning is to: Maintain airway & remove
any secretions or mucous blockage
• 2L/m via nasal cannula is 28 inspired 02 concentration
• Nurse teaching atelectasis, pt indicates a correct
understanding: It is important to do breathing exercises
every hr to prevent atelectasis (lung collapse)
• If pt states “when I feel SOB, I will breathe through my
mouth” needs follow up teaching.
• Pt w/ new trach which task can you delegate to UAP?
o Obtain supplies (gloves, mask suction supplies)
o Help reassure pt before and after, during procedure
o Transport sputum samples to lab for c&s testing
• Nurse sees this pt 1 , pt with hypercapnia & wearing O2
