competent to manage their medical care
Blind - verbally identify yourself when approaching, dont leave w/o letting pt
know, always ask how pt would like to be assisted, provide written materials of
pt preference
HOH- ask how best to communicate, give written materials as long as they are
not primary form of communication, sign language available, dont talk at a
distance, look directly at pt so mouth visible, speak normal & clear, dont
shout/exaggerate mouth movements/speak rapidly, minimize background noise
& glare
Deaf- ask how best to communicate, sign language available, dont use family
members to interpret, address pt not interpreter
Wheelchair- make sure path of access to room, respect personal space, dont
propel wheelchair unless asked, provide accessible equip, assist as needed,
dont separate pts from wheelchairs
