ASSIGNMENT 2 PREP STRATEGY
The current BIOL 3201 course outline places Assignment 2 after Modules 4, 5, and 6 and weights it at 25% of the course grade. This
workbook therefore emphasizes written explanation, pathway reasoning, comparison, case analysis, and integration across humoral and
T-cell immunity rather than repeating quiz-style multiple choice.
AREA WHAT TO BE ABLE TO EXPLAIN
Module 4 Antibody structure/isotypes, B-cell receptor signaling, B-cell development, tolerance, T-dependent help, class switching, somatic
hypermutation, affinity maturation, plasma and memory cells.
Module 5 TCR/CD3, MHC I versus II, endogenous and exogenous processing, TAP, invariant chain/CLIP/HLA-DM, CD4/CD8 restriction,
dendritic-cell priming, cross-presentation.
Module 6 Thymic development, positive/negative selection, central and peripheral tolerance, costimulation, IL-2, helper T-cell differentiation,
CTL killing, contraction and memory.
SECTION A: SHORT RESPONSE
Foundations from Modules 4-6
01 Short Response
Explain how antibody structure allows one molecule to combine antigen recognition with effector function.
MODEL RESPONSE
The variable regions at the tips of the Fab arms form antigen-binding sites and determine specificity. The constant Fc region does not bind
antigen directly; instead, it engages Fc receptors and complement proteins. This separation allows the same specificity to trigger different
effector mechanisms depending on antibody isotype.
02 Short Response
Distinguish the major functional roles of IgM, IgG, IgA, IgE, and IgD.
MODEL RESPONSE
IgM is prominent early in primary responses and is efficient at complement activation. IgG dominates many systemic secondary responses
and supports neutralization, opsonization, complement, and placental transfer. IgA protects mucosal surfaces and secretions, IgE
participates in mast-cell responses and defense against helminths, and IgD mainly functions as a B-cell receptor on naive B cells.
03 Short Response
Why is V(D)J recombination essential for adaptive immunity?
MODEL RESPONSE
V(D)J recombination assembles variable-region gene segments in developing lymphocytes, creating a very large repertoire of antigen
receptors from a limited number of genes. Junctional changes add further diversity. This process gives different B and T cells distinct
receptor specificities before antigen exposure.
