Chapter 5:
● Gumboot Dlamini is laid to rest.
● Boston wakes up.
● The cemetery is not well-kept and any attempt to
keep it neat does not work out.
● Take note of the trees in the cemetery- how
disfigured and dead they are- this is unlike anything
that one sees in the suburbs.
● Rev Henry Ransome- responsible for performing
funerals of people who are not identified. He is
distressed because of what Gumboot Dlamini looked
like when he died. He does not know how to feel.
● Gumboot Dlamini is buried without respect and any
decent memory yet he had a life which was
completely ignored. They do not even know his name
and identify him as “Friday Night” as this is the only
thing that they know.
● Boston wakes up and is in a terrible state: badly
injured: Complete image of hopelessness.
● The rest of the gang members (Butcher, Die Aap)
have nothing to do without Tsotsi’s leadership- they
lack any growth or personality. The beginning of the
dismantling of the gang.
● The throwing of the stones is a symbolism for their
boredom and lack of self-awareness and critical
thinking. They are happy to just sit and wait for
instructions and do not act on their own free-will.
