How is leadership defined in nursing?

Leadership occurs any time a person attempts to influence the beliefs, opinions, or behaviors of a person or
group. The function of a leader is to guide people and groups to accomplish common goals.
*Leaders often take risks, inspire others, and help move a group toward shared goals.
*Leadership involves influencing the beliefs, opinions, and behaviors of individuals or groups.
*It can be shaped by personality traits, learned skills, and the situation.
*A person can be a leader even without formal authority within an organization.
*All nurses demonstrate leadership when they help advance nursing practice and improve patient care.
EX: an effective nurse leader is able to inspire others on the health care team to make patient-centered care
an important aspect of all care activities

What is the difference between formal and informal leadership?

*Formal leadership: practiced by a nurse who is officially appointed to a position with designated authority
(EX: charge nurse, nurse manager). Authority is granted by the organization.
*Informal leadership: exercised by an individual without an official title or authority but who can influence and
persuade others. This person may or may not be a professional nurse
