MODULE 1.1 : COMPUTERS IN OUR EVERYDAY LIVES
Why do we use computers?
• Computers are effective, accurate and reliable.
• Computers are an important means of communication.
Effectiveness
• Computers save time and work faster.
• Computers reduce workload and take over calculations.
• Computers save resources through efficient use of electricity, air conditioning and paper.
• Sensors and technology limit energy waste and carbon dioxide emissions.
Accuracy
• Accurate application programs and data are necessary for computers to operate accurately.
• Accurate calculations ensure precision in mass production.
• Computers can repeatedly perform tasks 100% accurately with correct software.
Reliability
• Computers are accurate and don't tire like humans.
• Computerized solutions require long development time and are expensive.
• In the long term, computerized solutions are cost effective.
• Computerized solutions are chosen for their efficiency.
Communication
• Computers enable us to communicate globally and effectively.
• Distance is no longer a limitation in the business world.
• ICT offers various communication methods and saves on costs.
• Social networks enable global social interaction.
• Computers offer economic benefits, entertainment and fun.
Types of computer systems
• Comparison factors for computers include power, usage, size and software.
• Computers are divided into non-portable and portable computers.
• Non-portable computers are large and more powerful.
• Non-portable computers can be desktops or servers.
• Desktop computers have different configurations and prices.
• A server is a powerful computer that provides services to a network.
What is an entry level computer?
• All computer types have an entry-level model with low hardware specifications.
• Entry-level models are often installed with "Home Editions" of software.
• Specifications for entry-level systems change over time.

, Portable computers
• Portable computers have all-in-one design and are easy to carry.
• They have built-in battery and protective case.
• Laptops sell better than desktops.
• Smartphones, tablets and phablets are always online with cellular connectivity.
• Laptops use WiFi or fixed connection for internet.
Examples
• Laptop: Larger than 12" or 13" screen, similar.
• Tablet: Portable computer with touch or pen-sensitive screen.
• Hybrid PC: Screen that flips or folds down, used as a laptop or tablet.
• Smartphone: Mobile phone with operating system and apps, touch screen interface.
• Phablet: Smartphone with screen larger than 5".
Categories of users
• Computer specifications depend on the needs of the user.
• Types of users include general, mobile and super users.
• Official definitions and descriptions of the different types of users.
Personal user
• Personal users: office, internet, e-mail, social networks, Skype, photos, entertainment.
• Basic computers are powerful enough.
SOHO user
• SOHO users: accounting, databases, electronic documentation, planning.
• Architects and engineers: powerful computers for plan design.
Superuser
• Power users require powerful hardware and software.
• This includes game enthusiasts, architects, engineers, video editors and scientists.
• They require fast processors and large amounts of memory and storage capacity.
• Superusers use all advanced features of the software they work on.
Mobile user
• Mobile users are not necessarily a separate category.
• They just want to take their devices with them wherever they go.
• Every category can now use mobile technology.
• The technology used depends on the purpose of the user.
• Laptops for productive and work-related tasks.
• Smartphones and tablets for internet, e-mail, games, GPS, notes, photos and recordings.
Convergence
• Convergence: different technologies and functions are merged into one device.
• Smartphone and tablet: combination of various technologies in one device.
• One device for multiple tasks without carrying multiple devices.
