Buttercups Module 4 Questions and Correct
Answers
Question 1
Vet prescription requirments
Correct Answer
POM-V and POM-VPS products can only be prescribed against a valid prescription.

Where the prescriber is the same person as the supplier e.g. if a veterinary surgeon
sees the animal and then supplies the POM-V or POM-VPS then the prescription
can be oral or written.

If, however, the prescriber does not supply the product then a written prescription
must be generated e.g. if a veterinary surgeon saw the animal and then a
pharmacist supplied the POM-V or POM-VPS medication.

Veterinary prescriptions also need to meet particular requirements. The extra
information required in addition to the prescription requirements you have already
learnt about are:

Name and address of owner/keeper
Identification (including species) of the animal or group of animals being treated
The premises at which the animals are kept if different to the owner/keeper's
address
The dosage and administration instructions (the Veterinary Medicines Directorate
advises that "as directed" is not acceptable)
The withdrawal period if relevant
If it is prescribed under the cascade a comment to indicate this
Veterinary prescriptions for Schedules 2 and 3 controlled drugs must also meet
these extra requirements in addition to the usual controlled drugs prescription
requirements:

The address of the prescriber must be in the UK and their RCVS number should be
on the prescription
There must be a declaration that the controlled drug is prescribed to treat an animal
or herd under the veterinary surgeon or veterinary practitioner's care
The name and address of the person to whom the controlled drug is to be delivered
must be stated

,Question 2
What happens when prescribed items are dispensed in a dispensing doctors?
Correct Answer
The items should be dispensed one at a time. The prescription, not the label, should
be used to select stock.

Question 3
What happens when dispensing labels are produced in a hospital pharmacy?
Correct Answer
The label(s) and a bag label need to be printed using the information on the
prescription. These should then be kept with the prescription. A basket or tray will
ensure prescriptions are adequately segregated.

Question 4
What happens when the dispensing/supply is recorded in a community pharmacy?
Correct Answer
Where additional records are required these could be made now if the items are to
be supplied immediately.

Question 5
What happens when prescriptions are endorsed in a dispensing doctors?
Correct Answer
A paper prescription will be endorsed (marked) and stamp with the dispensary
stamp and date to indicate it has been dispensed and ensured you will get paid
accurately. For electronic prescriptions this will be done on the computer using an
endorsing screen to make any necessary annotations required to be paid accurately.

, Question 6
Audits of veterinary medicine
Correct Answer
pharmacists must keep records of the receipt and supply of POM-V and POM-VPS
products including all documentation relating to each transaction. It is also good
practice to keep records of the receipt and supply of NFA-VPS products.

Where it is mandatory to keep records, they must be kept for at least five years.
Pharmacists can either keep all the documents that show the information needed or
may make records in the prescription register.

Further information about recording supplies of veterinary medicines can be found
in the MEP. In addition, the pharmacist will be expected to record adverse drug
reactions and undertake an annual stock audit.

Question 7
Collecting outstanding items
Correct Answer
Patients should also be advised of the importance of collecting owed items
promptly as controlled drugs in Schedules 2, 3 and 4 may only be collected within
28 days of the date on the prescription. You will learn more about this in the
Controlled Drugs module.

Prescriptions for controlled drugs in Schedule 5 and all other prescriptions are valid
for 6 months meaning the patient may return and request their owing at any point
within that time.

However, judgement will need to be exercised whether to make a supply if a long
time has passed because the treatment may no longer be appropriate for the
patient. You should consult the pharmacist or a clinician if you are concerned about
this.
