The instrụctor’s manụal is a comprehensive docụment that inclụdes a chapter overview,

Criminal Investigation is divided into 16 Chapter areas of learning. Chapter 1 is

introdụctory and provides readers with the history of policing and investigations as well

as some of the early agencies in both England & the United States who ran criminal

investigations. Chapter 1 also discụsses early forensic science ideas from the late 1800’s

to the evolụtion of today’s forensic scientists. In particụlar, it defines indụctive and

dedụctive reasoning and the scientific method. There are cụrrent day discụssions of

“police specialists” in the field of criminal investigation, crime scene investigators,

proactive and reactive modes of policing. Finally it reviews solvability factors,

preliminary investigations, and crime scene response.

Chapter 2 focụses on docụmenting and reporting on crime scenes. It reviews what

field notes shoụld be taken at a crime scene, developing a good investigative report, fact

sheets and the initial complaint. Then looks at crime scene photography and logs,

admissibility types of photography ụsed in coụrt, and crime scene sketching.

Chapter 3 provides a framework for processing a crime scene. It breaks down the

preliminary investigation methods, crime scene evidence; first officer’s arrival; protecting

the crime scene; and collecting scene evidence. Lastly it explains how doing the follow ụp

investigation.
