Summary of poem
Explores relationship between humanity and nature.
About poets frustration at the bulldozing of nature in order to supply our housing needs.
The vibrant, vital and valuable field is going to be sacrificed for the development of 44
houses.
The poem becomes a celebration of the field and the poets forensic eye for detail is
obvious. She describes its wildlife and flora.
The field is also where young people go to experiment to learn to escape the rules that
adults make for them to make mistakes and memories. Where will they go one the field is
gone? Meehan makes a point that it is not only nature that loses when such destruction
occurs.
Stanza about when something valuable is being scarified is palpable and emphasised by
comparing nature to household cleaning (artificial). Communicates sense of grief at what is
being lost.
Final stanza poet imagines herself walking out on the field under the moon etc... beautiful
and cinematic image. She wants to celebrate the field before it is gone.
