Study Module 1: The Corporate Entrepreneurial Mindset
Corporate entrepreneurship (often called intrapreneurship) is the process of creating new
businesses, products, services or processes inside an existing organisation. The organisation
already has resources, brand equity, customers and constraints. The corporate entrepreneurial
mindset is the set of attitudes and behaviours that allow people inside the firm to act like
entrepreneurs while still delivering on the core business.
Key elements of the mindset
• Opportunity recognition inside existing constraints
• Calculated risk-taking rather than reckless risk
• Resource bootstrapping – using what the firm already has in creative ways
• Persistence against internal resistance and politics
• Ownership of outcomes even when formal authority is limited
Practical scenario
A mid-level manager at a large South African retailer notices that customers increasingly want
same-day grocery delivery. Instead of waiting for a top-down project, she assembles a small cross-
functional team, pilots a limited version in one city using existing store stock and delivery partners,
measures results, and presents data-backed recommendations. That is the corporate
entrepreneurial mindset in action.
South African illustration – Shoprite Sixty60
Shoprite’s rapid expansion of the Sixty60 service shows how operational managers and digital
teams identified a convenience gap, leveraged existing store inventory and locations, and built a
new fulfilment capability. The initiative required opportunity sensing, experimentation under time
pressure, and the ability to secure internal support without waiting for a multi-year strategic plan.
Exam-style diagnostic prompt
“Assess the degree to which employees in [given company] display an entrepreneurial mindset.
Use evidence of opportunity focus, risk tolerance and resourcefulness. Recommend two practical
steps management could take to strengthen this mindset.”
Conceptual Flowchart Placeholder
Opportunity Sensing → Internal Resource Scan → Small Experiment → Data Feedback → Scale or Kill
Decision. Students should be able to redraw and apply this sequence to any case organisation.
