ASSIGNMENT 2 SEMESTER 2
2026
DUE 15 SEPTEMBER 2026
Brand Portfolio Management: A Strategic Analysis of Nestlé South Africa's Coffee Category
Company Website: https://www.nestle.co.za
Selected Category: Coffee and Coffee-Related Beverages
1. Introduction
Nestlé S.A. is the world's largest food and beverage company, operating in over 190 countries with
a diverse portfolio of brands spanning multiple product categories (Nestlé, 2023). For the purposes
of this assignment, Nestlé South Africa's coffee category has been selected as the basis for analysis.
The coffee category provides an excellent illustration of brand portfolio management because it
contains multiple distinct brands occupying different price points, targeting different consumer
segments, and performing different strategic functions within the portfolio.
As a Trainee Brand Manager, understanding how each brand contributes to the overall health and
competitiveness of the portfolio is essential. This assignment develops a Brand Product Matrix for
Nestlé's coffee portfolio and critically discusses the four strategic roles within a brand portfolio:
Flanker brands, Cash cows, High-end prestige brands, and Low-end entry-level brands (Keller &
Swaminathan, 2020).
2. Brand Product Matrix: Nestlé South Africa Coffee Category
A Brand Product Matrix is a two-dimensional representation that maps a company's brands against
the product categories or sub-categories in which they compete (Keller & Swaminathan, 2020). The
rows represent brands, and the columns represent product categories or market segments. A tick
(✓) indicates that the brand competes in that particular category or segment.
