, 1. Introduction
Advertising has moved from a mainly one-directional model of message transmission
towards a data-intensive, interactive and increasingly automated communication
environment. Digital platforms and social media first expanded the role of consumers
by allowing them to search for information, respond to organisations, create content,
share experiences and influence other consumers through electronic word of mouth.
Artificial intelligence now extends this transformation because advertising decisions
can be informed, produced, distributed and evaluated through systems that process
large volumes of data and generate outputs at a speed and scale that would be
difficult to achieve manually (Barker and Hanekom, 2022; Ford et al., 2023).
The integration of AI into advertising changes more than operational efficiency
because it alters the relationship between organisations, advertising messages and
consumers. Personalised content can increase relevance and reduce information
overload, while predictive systems can help advertisers identify likely consumer
needs before a purchase occurs. At the same time, the same data-intensive
practices can increase privacy concerns, perceived surveillance, manipulation risk
and uncertainty about whether advertising content is authentic or machine
generated. These tensions mean that AI advertising must be evaluated through both
marketing effectiveness and consumer welfare (Rodgers, 2021; Jain et al., 2024).
This assignment develops a theoretically grounded argument on the integration of AI
into the advertising process and the subsequent implications for consumer
behaviour. The discussion defines AI advertising and its main characteristics,
explains its use in consumer insight discovery, advertising creation, media planning,
delivery and performance evaluation, and then analyses consumer behaviour in an
interactive digital environment. Particular attention is given to personalisation, trust,
privacy, decision-making, user-generated content, co-creation and conversational
opportunities, before the opportunities and ethical challenges of AI-driven advertising
are critically evaluated (Qin and Jiang, 2019; Lowe et al., 2025).
