1. Briefly illustrate the various aspects which oral history focused on when
teaching children, men and women about morality.

• Social life in pre-colonial education was embraced through oral history.
• They used oral transmission to teach children about group histories,
heroism tales and treachery as well as the necessary skills needed for
survival.
• Traditions and cultures were transferred from generation to generation
through word of mouth.
• It included structuring of ballads, songs, or chants.
• According to Leshoai (1981: 242), the focus of the oral history, was to
teach children, men and women about wisdom, morality, religion,
geography, history, philosophy, politics, and the entire spectrum of
human existence in the various communities.
• Oral history refers to where older people shared their life experiences
with children, men and woman.
• The socialisation process starts with family. They were taught about
the cultural norms, beliefs, and values as well as the rules on how to
interact with others.
• Family plays a vital role to form the behaviour and attitudes of younger
children.
• Children are taught about their initial social status and their identity in
line with their religion, race, culture, and social class.
