The Brief:
Cornwall Hill College has decided that they would like to become more eco-friendly and do away with single use plastics, as a result, the tuck-shop has
began selling cooldrinks in can. These cans are recyclable. The school wishes to recycle these cans, but they need to first flatten these cans. As this
means that they school needs a device to crush these cans. My goal is to design a easy to use can crusher to be placed next to the recycling bin and
used by all the students of the school to crush the cans.
Specifications Constraints
The can crusher must be a hand powered device that Must be durable
makes use of mechanical advantage to crush the can Must be hand powered
The device must be safe for all students to use Must be easy for all students to use
The device needs to be durable Must be safe for all students to use
The device must be easy to use as the school has Should be made eco-friendly to comply with the
students who are in grade 1 who also need to be schools eco-friendly approach.
able to use it
Can should be released into a container/dustbin so
that young students using it will not be hurt by the
sharp edges of a can.

Analysis:
The final design of the can crusher will use welding combined with nuts and bolts. This is due to the fact that these two joining mechanism are
stronger than the other two joining mechanisms. Nuts and Bolts will be the primary joining mechanism as it provides a strong and cheap join.
Welding will be used for joins that require a strong but small join between two pieces of metal
