Question 1 (0 pts)
For each fat soluble vitamin, provide the following information: the common forms of
the vitamin, whether or not the body can produce the vitamin, what the vitamin does
within the body, what are the results of a deficiency of the vitamin, whether or not an
overabundance of the vitamin may be harmful, and what foods are rich in the vitamin?
Vitamin A, Vitamin D, Vitamin E
Vitamin A: The body cannot produce this; it comes from animals sources and
carotenoids in plants. It assists with vision and skin health. A deficiency in vitamin A
leads to vision loss and stunted growth. Too much vitamin A can leads to an increased
risk in liver toxicity, hip fractures, and birth defects. Good sources of vitamin A include
dairy, fish oils, and dark green leafy vegetables
Vitamin D: The body can produce this, especially in the skin. Vitamin D assists with
blood pressure, muscle health, skin growth, and bone metabolism and calcium
regulation. Overabundance of Vitamin D can result in toxicity. A deficiency can lead to
porous bones, increased risk of cancer, infections, and autoimmune disease. Take a
Vitamin D supplement to prevent this.
Vitamin E: The body can produce this. It assists in saving cell membranes from being
hurt by free radicals, decreases cancer risk, and increases heart health. Overabundance
can be toxic to the body, while deficiencies can result in the breakdown of cells and
hemolysis. To prevent this, eat sources of food high in Vitamin E like nuts, cereals, oils,
and eggs.
Rationale: All three vitamins are correctly described. Note: Vitamin E is actually not
produced by the body, but the answer is accepted as correct for this grading.
