1. Psychology as a Scientific Discipline
Psychology is the systematic scientific study of behavior, cognition, emotion, and mental processes. Its central
objective is to explain how biological, psychological, social, developmental, and environmental factors interact
to produce observable behavior and subjective experience.
Modern psychology is therefore inherently multilevel. A behavior such as anxiety, for example, cannot
necessarily be explained at one level alone. Neural activity, hormonal regulation, learning history, cognitive
appraisal, personality, social context, and environmental stressors may all contribute.
A useful conceptual model is:
Behavior = f(biological factors, cognition, emotion, development, social context, environment)
The scientific character of psychology depends on systematic observation, operational definitions, empirical
testing, statistical inference, replication, and theoretical development.
Core characteristics of psychological science
Empirical: claims are evaluated using observable and measurable evidence.
Systematic: procedures are structured so that observations can be compared and evaluated.
Falsifiable: scientific hypotheses must allow the possibility of being shown incorrect.
Probabilistic: psychological effects are rarely deterministic; they usually describe tendencies and
distributions.
A scientific explanation therefore differs from an intuition or everyday belief. An intuitive explanation may
sound plausible without being empirically testable.
“Correlation is not causation.”
This distinction is fundamental because two variables can covary without one producing the other.
Operationalization
Abstract constructs must be translated into measurable variables.
For example:
Construct → operational definition → measurement
“Stress” could be operationalized using:
self-reported perceived stress;
cortisol concentration;
heart-rate variability;
behavioral indicators;
longitudinal health outcomes.
Different operationalizations may measure different aspects of the same construct. Consequently,
measurement validity is essential.
