, DRW1514 ASSIGNMENT 3
DUE DATE: 23 OCTOBER 2026
SECTION A: SHORT QUESTIONS
QUESTION 1: FUNDAMENTALS OF DRAWING [15]
1.1 Define the term drawing and explain its importance as a form of visual
communication. (4)
Drawing can be defined as the process of creating marks on a surface to represent objects,
ideas, observations or imagined subjects. It is one of the most basic forms of visual art
because an artist can communicate an idea through lines, shapes, tones and textures
without relying on written language (DRW1514 Study Guide, 2026: 12).
Drawing is important because it allows an artist to record what is observed and
communicate thoughts and visual experiences. It can be used to represent real objects,
develop creative ideas and explore possible compositions before producing a more
developed artwork. Drawing also helps students develop hand-eye coordination,
observation and visual awareness (DRW1514 Study Guide, 2026: 13).
Drawing is therefore not simply the act of copying an object. It involves making decisions
about what to observe, what to emphasise and how to represent the subject on a two-
dimensional surface.
1.2 Identify and briefly explain four different types of lines commonly used in
drawing. (4)
Straight lines are lines that move in a direct direction and can be horizontal, vertical or
diagonal. They can communicate stability, direction and structure.
Curved lines change direction gradually and are useful when representing rounded or
organic forms such as human bodies, plants and animals.
Broken lines consist of separate marks rather than one continuous line. They can be used
to suggest movement, texture or less-defined edges.
