Plato's Philosopher-King: Connecting Metaphysics, Ethics and Politics

Introduction

Plato's idea of the philosopher-king is one of the most famous ideas in Western
philosophy. In his book The Republic, Plato argues that philosophers should rule
society. But why? The answer lies in how Plato connects three big areas of
philosophy: metaphysics (what is real), ethics (what is good), and politics (how to run
society). For Plato, these three areas are deeply connected. A person who truly
understands reality will also understand what is good, and therefore is the best person
to lead society.

, Metaphysics: The Theory of Forms

To understand why philosophers should rule, we first need to understand Plato's theory
of reality, called the Theory of Forms.

Plato believed that the physical world we see around us is not the real world. The
physical world is always changing things grow, decay, and die. Because it is always
changing, we cannot have true knowledge about it. We can only have opinions.

But behind this changing world, Plato said, there is another world, a world
of Forms or Ideas. These Forms are perfect, unchanging, and eternal. For example, in
the physical world there are many beautiful things, but none are perfectly beautiful.
However, we have an idea of perfect Beauty itself. This perfect Beauty is a Form. The
same is true for Justice, Goodness, and Truth.

As the PLS1501 Study Guide explains: "Plato argued that the ordinary world we know
through our five senses cannot be fully real... if we can ever be said to know something,
that which we know must be true, and always remains true despite changing and
deceptive appearances." So for Plato, true knowledge is knowledge of the Forms – the
perfect, unchanging realities beyond the physical world.

Ethics: Knowledge is Virtue

Now, how does this theory of reality connect to ethics the study of what is good and
right? For Plato, the highest Form of all is the Form of the Good. Just as the sun gives
light so we can see physical things, the Form of the Good gives light to the mind so we
can understand truth and reality.
