COMPLETE BOARD REVISION NOTES • ALL 5 CHAPTERS

CHAPTER 1: DEVELOPMENT
Development refers to progress, improvement in standard of living, economic well-being, and overall quality of human life.

Core Principles of Developmental Goals:
Different People, Different Goals: Aspirations vary based on life situations. (e.g., A landless worker wants better daily
wages; a rich farmer wants high crop support prices and cheap labor).
Conflicting Goals: What is development for one may be destructive for another. (e.g., Industrialists want big dams for
electricity, but this floods agricultural land and displaces tribal communities).
Mix of Goals: Besides income, people seek non-material goals: equal treatment, freedom, security, respect, and a clean
environment.

COMPARING COUNTRIES: INCOME & OTHER CRITERIA
To compare nations, Average Income (Per Capita Income - PCI) is used rather than total income, as countries have different
population sizes.
PER CAPITA INCOME (PCI) FORMULA
Per Capita Income = Total National Income ÷ Total Population

World Bank Classification (World Development Reports): Categorizes countries strictly based on PCI measured in US Dollars ($).
Limitation: Averages hide income disparities and fail to reflect wealth distribution.
KEY SOCIAL & HEALTH INDICATORS
Indicator Definition & Board Relevance

Infant Mortality Rate Number of infants dying before age 1 per 1,000 live births in a year. Low IMR indicates
(IMR) good healthcare.

Literacy Rate Proportion of literate population in the 7 years and above age group.
Net Attendance Ratio Total children aged 14–15 attending school as a % of total children in that age group.

Published by UNDP (United Nations Development Programme) in the Human
Human Development
Development Report. Evaluates 3 dimensions: Health (Life Expectancy), Education
Index (HDI)
(Schooling years), and Standard of Living (GNI Per Capita).

PUBLIC FACILITIES & SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
Money cannot buy a pollution-free environment, protection from infectious diseases, or unadulterated food. Collective public
provisioning (Public Distribution System / PDS, public schools, primary health centers) is required.
BODY MASS INDEX (BMI) FORMULA
BMI = Weight (kg) ÷ [Height (m)]² | (<18.5: Undernourished, 18.5–24.9: Normal, ≥25:
Overweight)

Sustainable Development: Development that meets present needs without compromising future generations' capacity to meet theirs.
(e.g., Addressing groundwater depletion in Punjab and crude oil reserve exhaustion).

, CHAPTER 2: SECTORS OF THE INDIAN ECONOMY
Economic activities are grouped into three primary sectors based on the nature of the activity:
1. THREE PRIMARY ECONOMIC SECTORS
Sector Core Definition Examples

Activities undertaken by directly exploiting natural
Agriculture, forestry, fishing,
Primary Sector resources. Forms the base for all other products. Also
mining, dairy.
called Agriculture & Related Sector.
Covers activities in which natural products are changed Cotton yarn weaving, sugar
Secondary Sector into other forms through manufacturing/industrial manufacturing from sugarcane,
processes. Also called Industrial Sector. steel plant.
Activities that generate services rather than physical Transport, storage, banking,
Tertiary Sector goods. Aids the primary and secondary production communication, trade, IT
process. Also called Service Sector. services.

2. MEASURING ECONOMIC ACTIVITY: GDP & INTERMEDIATE GOODS

Gross Domestic Product (GDP): The total monetary value of all final goods and
services produced within a country during a particular year. It indicates the total size and health
of an economy.
Avoid Double Counting: Only the value of final goods is counted in GDP. The value of intermediate goods (inputs used in
production, e.g., flour used by a bakery to bake bread) is already included in the final price of the product.
Historical Shift in Sectors: Initial development stages saw the Primary sector as dominant. With industrialization, the Secondary
sector grew. Modern developed nations are dominated by the Tertiary sector. In India, the Tertiary sector contributes the highest share
to GDP, but the Primary sector still employs the largest workforce.
3. EMPLOYMENT DIVISION: WHERE ARE MOST PEOPLE EMPLOYED?

Disguised Unemployment (Underemployment): A situation where more people are
engaged in a work than required. Even if a few workers are removed, total output remains
unaffected.
Example: Small farm families where 5 members work on a small plot, but only 2 are actually
needed.
HOW TO CREATE MORE EMPLOYMENT?
1. Agricultural Infrastructure: Constructing dams, canals, and rural roads to enable multi-cropping.
2. Cheap Agricultural Credit: Providing low-interest loans for seeds, fertilizers, and equipment.
3. Local Processing Industries: Setting up food processing units, cold storages, and honey collection centers in rural areas.
4. Promoting Education & Tourism: Expanding schools and healthcare creates lakhs of jobs.
