QUESTION 1:

Process Approach to Writing, ZPD and Scaffolding

For this discussion, the narrative essay is selected as a suitable writing genre for a Grade 8
First Additional Language (FAL) classroom. Narrative writing requires learners to develop
characters, organise events logically, use appropriate vocabulary and construct grammatically
accurate sentences. These requirements make narrative writing suitable for demonstrating
how the process approach to writing can support learners within the Zone of Proximal
Development (ZPD). The process approach views writing as a series of interconnected stages,
including planning, drafting, revising and editing, rather than as a single activity that focuses
only on the final written product (Hyland, 2003). The drafting and revising stages are
particularly significant because they create opportunities for learners to receive support,
experiment with language and progressively develop greater independence.

The ZPD can be understood as the gap between what a learner is able to accomplish
independently and what the learner can achieve with appropriate assistance from a more
knowledgeable person or a more capable peer (Vygotsky, 1978). Scaffolding is closely
connected to the ZPD because it provides temporary assistance that enables learners to
perform tasks that are initially beyond their independent abilities (Wood, Bruner & Ross,
1976). Effective scaffolding does not involve completing the task on behalf of the learner.
Instead, it provides carefully targeted assistance that enables learners to participate actively
in the learning process. As learners develop competence, the support can gradually be
reduced, allowing them to take increasing responsibility for their own writing (Wood, Bruner
& Ross, 1976). Scaffolding therefore provides a practical means of helping learners move
from assisted performance towards independent performance within the ZPD.

Mediation plays an important role in writing development because learning takes place
through interaction with other people and through the use of cultural and linguistic tools
