 QUESTION 1: Process Approach to Writing, ZPD and Scaffolding

1. Select a writing genre suitable for a Grade 8 or Grade 9 First Additional Language (FAL)
classroom (e.g., a discursive essay, descriptive paragraph or narrative essay). Critically analyse
how the drafting and revising stages of the process approach to writing can support learners'
movement through Vygotsky's Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD).

The Process Approach, ZPD, and Scaffolding in a Grade 8 FAL Classroom

Introduction
For a Grade 8 First Additional Language (FAL) classroom, the discursive essay is a highly suitable
writing genre. It requires learners to present balanced arguments on topics relevant to their lives,
such as "Should learners be permitted to use cell phones during school hours?" This genre develops
critical thinking and persuasive language skills, both of which are central to the FAL curriculum.
However, discursive writing is cognitively demanding, particularly for second-language learners.
The process approach to writing, with its emphasis on drafting and revising, provides an ideal
framework for supporting learners through Vygotsky's Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD), where
targeted scaffolding by a More Knowledgeable Other (MKO) enables learners to accomplish tasks
they cannot yet complete independently.

The Relationship Between Scaffolding and the ZPD
Scaffolding refers to the temporary, adjustable support provided by an MKO to help a learner bridge
the gap between their current independent ability and their potential level of achievement with
guidance (Vygotsky, 1978). This gap is precisely what Vygotsky (1978) termed the Zone of
Proximal Development. The MKO—whether a teacher, a more capable peer, or even a structured
learning tool—provides support that is gradually withdrawn as the learner internalises new skills and
becomes more competent (Wood, Bruner and Ross, 1976). In the South African FAL classroom,
where time and resources are often limited, scaffolding must be intentional and strategically
embedded within the writing process (Department of Basic Education, 2011). Importantly,
scaffolding is not a one-size-fits-all intervention; it must be responsive to the learner's evolving
needs and should diminish as the learner gains independence (Gibbons, 2002).

Mediation and Writing Development During Drafting and Revising
Mediation, a core concept in Vygotsky's theory, involves the use of cultural tools and social
interaction to facilitate cognitive development (Vygotsky, 1978). During drafting and revising,
mediation supports writing development by making the invisible processes of expert writers visible
to novice learners. For instance, when an MKO models how to generate ideas, organise arguments,
or evaluate sentence structure, they mediate the cognitive processes that underpin successful writing
(Lantolf and Thorne, 2006). During drafting, mediation helps learners move beyond writer's block
and produce coherent first attempts. During revising, mediation encourages learners to adopt an
evaluative stance towards their own work, shifting from surface-level corrections to deeper structural
and logical revisions (Flower and Hayes, 1981). This dual focus on generation and refinement
ensures that learners are continually operating within their ZPD, with the MKO adjusting support as
learners become more proficient.
