Functionalism - ANS-James's approach to mental processes, emphasizing the functions
and purposes of the mind and behavior in the individual's adaptation to the environment.
Why is human thought adaptive?

Psychodynamic approach - ANS-An approach to psychology focusing on unconscious
thought, the conflict between biological drives (such as the drive for sexual pleasure)
and society's demands, and early childhood family experiences. Founded by Sigmund
Freud.

Sigmund Freud and psychoanalysis - ANS-Developing the idea of the human
subconscious, he believed this had an enormous effect on an individual's life and
consisted mainly of the ego, id, and superego. (memory, dreams, thoughts). Early
relationships with parents shape an individuals personality.

Humanistic approach - ANS-An approach to psychology focusing on a person's positive
qualities, the capacity for positive growth, and the freedom to choose one's destiny.
People can choose to live by higher human values such as altruism and free will.
Revived interest in mental processes

altruism - ANS-unselfish regard for the welfare of others

Cognitive Approach - ANS-An approach to psychology focusing on the mental
processes involved in knowing: how we direct our attention, perceive, remember, think,
and solve problems.
