ASSIGNMENT 3 2026

Using Learning Theories and Frameworks for Teaching in ODeL

Introduction
Open, Distance, and e-Learning (ODeL) has emerged as a transformative force in higher education,
fundamentally reshaping how teaching and learning occur across geographical and temporal
boundaries. The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated this transformation, bringing distance education
issues to the fore in unprecedented ways and compelling institutions to reconsider their
pedagogical approaches (Naidoo, 2020). In this context, the effective application of learning
theories and instructional frameworks becomes not merely beneficial but essential for creating
meaningful educational experiences. This essay explores the theoretical foundations underpinning
ODeL, examines key instructional frameworks that guide practice, and considers their practical
application through teaching scenarios. The central argument posits that successful ODeL teaching
requires a deliberate, theoretically informed approach that weaves together multiple learning
theories and frameworks to support the learning experience (Mutendi and Makamure, 2019).

Theoretical Foundations of ODeL: Learning Theories
Understanding the theoretical underpinnings of learning is fundamental to effective teaching in any
context, but in ODeL, where the traditional classroom dynamics are absent, this understanding
becomes particularly critical. Four major learning theories provide the conceptual foundation for
ODeL pedagogy: behaviourism, cognitivism, constructivism, and connectivism.

Behaviourism
Behaviourism, rooted in the work of theorists such as Pavlov, Watson, and Skinner, focuses on
observable changes in behaviour resulting from environmental stimuli and reinforcement. In the
ODeL context, behaviourist principles manifest through clearly defined learning objectives,
structured content delivery, and frequent opportunities for assessment and feedback. The
emphasis on measurable outcomes aligns well with the modular approach common in distance
education, where learning is often broken into discrete, sequential units (Arthur, 2017). When
students complete quizzes, receive immediate automated feedback, and progress through content
based on demonstrated mastery, behaviourist principles are at work.

However, behaviourism's limitations become apparent in higher education contexts requiring
critical thinking and deep understanding. Research on modularisation in ODeL has revealed
concerning tendencies toward rote memorisation, as students may focus primarily on examination
preparation rather than genuine comprehension (Arthur, 2017). One student captured this concern
succinctly, explaining that the system encourages memorisation rather than deep comprehension,
and the limited time for each module and constant examination preparation prevent full
engagement with the subjects (Arthur, 2017). This observation highlights the risk of reducing
