Module 1: Overview of the IELTS Academic Reading Test
The IELTS Academic Reading test is designed to assess whether a candidate has the reading skills required
for undergraduate or postgraduate studies, or professional registration in an English-speaking environment.
The test lasts exactly 60 minutes with no extra transfer time given at the end.
Key Structure at a Glance:
• Duration: 60 minutes straight.
• Passages: 3 long reading passages ranging from descriptive and factual to discursive and analytical.
• Questions: Total of 40 questions (approx. 13-14 questions per passage).
• Scoring: Each correct answer is worth 1 mark. Raw scores are converted to the 9-band scale.
Texts are authentic and are taken from books, journals, magazines, and newspapers. They have been written
for a non-specialist audience but are appropriate for people entering university courses or seeking
professional registration.

Understanding Band Descriptors & Scoring Criteria
To achieve a Band 7.0 or higher, you need to understand how raw scores translate into official IELTS bands.
Unlike listening, where minor variations occur across versions, the reading conversion table is fairly
consistent.
Target Required Correct Answers
Proficiency Level Description
Band (out of 40)
Band 9.0 39 - 40 Expert user: fully operational, accurate, and fluent.
Band 8.0 35 - 38 Very good user: handles complex argumentation well.
Good user: handles complex language despite occasional
Band 7.0 30 - 34
inaccuracies.
Competent user: generally effective command despite some
Band 6.0 23 - 29
misunderstandings.
Band 5.0 16 - 22 Modest user: partial command, copes with overall meaning.
Strategic Objective: Aim for 36+ correct answers in your practice sessions to build a safety buffer for
exam day nerves and tricky questions.
The 20-20-20 Time Allocation Rule
One of the biggest mistakes candidates make is spending too much time on Passage 1 because it seems
easier. Texts become progressively more difficult from Passage 1 to Passage 3. Therefore, strict time
management is mandatory.
• Passage 1: 17 to 18 minutes maximum. (Leave 2-3 mins review).
• Passage 2: 20 minutes maximum.
• Passage 3: 20 to 22 minutes maximum.
