1.1 Overview of the IELTS Speaking Test Format
The IELTS Speaking examination is a face-to-face or video-call interview with a certified IELTS examiner. It lasts
between 11 and 14 minutes and consists of three distinct parts designed to evaluate your oral English proficiency
across a spectrum of tasks.

1.2 The Four Band Descriptors Explained
Your performance is scored equally (25% each) across four key criteria. Understanding what examiners look for is
essential for hitting Band 8.0 or higher.
1. Fluency & Coherence (FC)
Evaluates your ability to talk continuously without hesitation, repetition, or self-correction, as well as the
logical connection of your ideas using discourse markers.
2. Lexical Resource (LR)
Measures your vocabulary range, precision in word choice, natural use of collocations, idioms, and your
capacity to paraphrase effectively when a word escapes you.
3. Grammatical Range & Accuracy (GRA)
Assesses the variety of complex structures you produce (e.g., conditionality, passive voice, relative clauses)
and the frequency of error-free sentences.

Focuses on clarity, correct word and sentence stress, rhythm, intonation, and connected speech features.
Accent is NOT penalized as long as intelligibility is standard.
