, Question 1

1.1. The behaviour that Thabiso is portraying can be interpreted as an indicator of sexual
abuse. The exhibition of sexual behaviour inappropriate to the child’s developmental
phase, preoccupation with personal genitals and the inappropriate expression of
affection displayed by Thabiso to Sipho’s sister are all sexual behavioural indicators of
sexual abuse (Taylor, 1984).
1.2. I would recommend that Sipho tell an adult he trusts of the situation he’s observed so
that they can report it to social welfare or to the police.
1.3. As a child develops it is normal for them to be curious of their own bodies and the
bodies of others. When children of the same-age group experiment and explore their
bodies it is usually mutual curiosity, discovery and playfulness. This is harmless
activity.
1.4. I would suggest that Nthatie teach her daughter about her body and the different
genitals. I would also recommend that she teaches her child about inappropriate
sexual behaviour and how she can differentiate between predatory behaviour.
1.5. The behaviour of Gladys’ son could be described as normal development of the child
as he is exploring he’s body parts which could be out of interest. This experimentation
comes in different forms and at different stages of development as he’s quest for
identity according to the tutorial letter (MGG2602, p. 83).
1.6. I would recommend that Gladys monitor her child’s curiosity and research whether it
is in accordance with he’s stage of development. I would also suggest that she
regularly look for any physical signs of any abuse and continue to monitor he’s
experimentation, so that she knows whether it is age appropriate.

Question 2

2.1 The possible signs that a child is in trouble according to the tutorial letter are
(MGG2602, pp. 96-97):
i. Problems at school: observable changes in behaviour such as decline in
performance that cannot be attributed to specific cause, losing interest, lack of
concentration among other patterns.
ii. Isolation: this is an observable change in behaviour where a child withdraws from
friends and family and can be perceived as sad and non-communicative.
