First Main Argument — Consequentialism

WHO — Jeremy Bentham, father of utilitarianism.

WHAT — his ethical theory is teleological or consequentialist, meaning the moral worth of an
action is predicated upon its consequences (telos).

● he determines the rightness and wrongness of an action in accordance with the
principle of utility, stating that an action is right if it maximises utility (produces
pleasure and prevents pain).
● from determining the utility of each action on a scenario by scenario basis, this earns
the name of Act Utilitarianism.

Bentham finds that utility is the only intrinsic good, and that everything else that we usually
value is extrinsically good, thus, he creates the Hedonic Calculus in order to measure utility.

● Duration — how long
● Intensity — how strong
● Certainty — how likely
● Extent — how many
● Propinquity — how soon
● Fecundity — what are the chances it will lead to further pleasures?
● Purity — what are the chances it will not be followed by pain?

Since his theory is teleological, it means it is context sensitive and thus avoids ethical
idolatry.

This is unlike deontological ethical theories breach ethical idolatry through providing strict
rules.
