2. Provide only a limited amount of current when one phase is faulted to ground
3. Will always be some amount of current leakage so not perfectly ungrounded
Hazards associated with the shipboard ungrounded system - ANS-If a person is in
contact with an energized conductor then shock, electricity follows the path of least
resistance which could be through the body.
Effects of electric shock on the human body - ANS-Victim may be pale or "bluish"
Breathing weak or entirely absent
Cardiac arrest
Muscle, nerve, and tissue destruction
Thermal burns
The effects of current on the human body caused by electric shock with numbers
associated - ANS-.001 = cause perceptible shock
.01 = loss of muscle control
.1 = causes ventricular fibrillation and can be fatal if applied to a vital organ for more
than one second(Our equipment is rated at 10-15 amps)
Electric Shock Rescue - ANS-1. Secure power immediately
2. Remove victim using non conductive object
3. CPR
CPR Requirements for Electrical Safety - ANS-Minimum 50% of all electrical/electronic
ratings must be qualified with both the annual refresher and the 2 year certification
CO Role: Electrical Safety - ANS-Overall responsible for electrical safety and authorizes
all work on energized equipment. CDO's approval needed in CO absence. Exemptions
are in EDORM.
ELECTRO Role: Electrical Safety - ANS-1. Establishes tool issue and authorizes
electrical tools/equipment for shipboard use
2. Ensures CPR instructor certification is up-to-date
3. Supervises maintenance, repair and issue of Energized/de-energized equipment,
Portable electrical tools and PPE
4. All Energized work chits go through the ELECTRO
5. Must be Safety Programs Afloat qualified (ESO Qual)
Tool Issue Room - ANS-Ship must have. Must have work bench.
