, QUESTION 1: RIGHTS-BASED EPISTEMOLOGY
What is the UNCRPD and what does it say?
The United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD)
was created in 2006. It is a very important international law that says people with
disabilities have the same rights as everyone else. Before this law, many countries did
not have to include children with disabilities in regular schools. But the UNCRPD
changed that.
The most important part for teachers is Article 24. This article says that all children with
disabilities have the right to go to regular schools and get a good education. It says
schools cannot say "no" to a child just because they have a disability. Schools must
change and adapt so that every child can learn together. This is called an "inclusive
education system".
The UNCRPD also says that inclusive education is not just about putting children with
disabilities in the same classroom. It means they must be able to take part
fully and achieve success just like other children. Schools must give support to children
who need it so they can learn properly. This support is called "reasonable
accommodation" – it means making small changes so that every child can access
education equally.
Another important idea in the UNCRPD is non-discrimination. This means that children
with disabilities should not be treated unfairly or left out because of their disability. They
have the right to be treated with dignity and respect. The Convention also says that
children with disabilities have the right to express their views and be listened to, just like
all other children.
The UNCRPD is based on the idea that disability is not a problem with the person, it is
about how society creates barriers. This is called the social model of disability. It says
