QUESTION 1: CHARACTERISTICS OF A GOOD PSYCHOLOGICAL ASSESSMENT
MEASURE AND LEGAL REQUIREMENTS
1.1 Discuss five characteristics of a good psychological assessment measure
that should guide Ndamulelo's decision-making. (10 Marks)
Based on the prescribed textbook and study guide:
1. Standardisation
Assessment measures must be administered under carefully controlled standardised
conditions (Foxcroft & Roodt, 2013, p. 5). This means that the test instructions, time
limits, and scoring procedures are uniform for all test-takers. The Binet-Simon Scale, for
example, was revolutionary because it was "given under standardised conditions for
example everyone was given the same test instructions and format)" (Foxcroft & Roodt,
2013, p. 13). Standardisation ensures that differences in test scores reflect actual
differences in the construct being measured rather than variations in administration
procedures. "the key features of psychological instruments are that they are
standardised instruments used to obtain a sample of behaviour" (IOP3701 Study Guide,
2017, p. 39).
, 2. Reliability
A measure must demonstrate consistency in what it measures. As defined in the
textbook, "The reliability of a measure refers to the consistency with which it measures
whatever it measures" (Foxcroft & Roodt, 2013, p. 60). "The reliability of a psychological
instrument is expressed by means of the reliability coefficient, which is a correlation
coefficient" (IOP3701 Study Guide, 2017, p. 32). The Employment Equity Act (EEA)
specifically requires that psychological tests "has been scientifically shown to be valid
and reliable" (Foxcroft & Roodt, 2013, p. 27), making reliability a legal as well as a
technical requirement.
3. Validity
Validity concerns "what the test measures and how well it does so" (Foxcroft & Roodt,
2013, p. 70). "Validity is concerned with what the psychological instrument measures
and how well it measures. The psychological instrument measures what it is supposed
to measure and not something else" (IOP3701 Study Guide, 2017, p. 33). The EEA also
requires that tests are valid. Ndamulelo must verify that the measures he selects have
evidence of content validity (adequately sampling the domain of interest), construct
validity (measuring the intended theoretical construct), and criterion-related validity
(predicting relevant outcomes).
4. Appropriate Norms
Assessment measures should have "guidelines available to understand and interpret
the results," which "may make provision for the comparison of an individual's
performance to that of an appropriate norm group" (Foxcroft & Roodt, 2013, p. 6).
Norms provide a reference point for interpreting test scores. "A norm is a measurement
against which the individual's raw score is evaluated so that the individual's position
relative to that of the normative sample can be determined" (IOP3701 Study Guide,
