How Kendrick Lamar Uses Lyricism to Educates and Empower

American rapper Kendrick Lamar Ducksworth, widely known as Kendrick Lamar,

released his third album titled To Pimp a Butterfly on March 15th, 2015. In sixteen well-

produced tracks, it explains the life story of Lamar, along with the problem of systemic racism in

America. However, one track in particular stood out from the rest; the song titled “Alright”. This

song became a well-known protest song, following Sandra Bland’s death in July of 2015. Since

then, the song has been played at many protests, including the Million Man March for Racial

Equality and many Black Lives Matter movements. The symbolism in Kendrick Lamar’s

“Alright” has educated the younger generations about hope for a better future, empowerment,

and resilience through intricate wordplay, repetition, and heart-rending lyrics.

Throughout his song, Lamar uses intricate wordplay to express the struggles of the issues

with racism in the United States. However, he also expresses the idea that we still must have

hope and faith for a better future. One example is, in the introductory verse of the song, he says

“Alls my life, I have to fight / Alls my life, I- / Hard times like, "Yah!" / Bad trips like, "Yah!" /

Nazareth / I'm fucked up, homie, you fucked up / But if God got us, then we gon' be alright”. In

this section of the song, he recognizes the suffering that many communities go through. But,

instead of simply giving in to the pain, Kendrick delivers the message that people still have to

have faith and determination for a better future for the nation. The messages relate to religion
