The Appropriateness of Think Big! for a Grade 2 Foundation Phase English FAL
Class

Kat Kronenberg’s Think Big! is an engaging children’s story that combines adventure,
humour, colourful illustrations, rhyme and important life lessons. The story is particularly
appropriate for a Grade 2 English First Additional Language (FAL) class because it uses
familiar animals, simple ideas and repetition to support language learning while
encouraging confidence, courage, cooperation and respect for others.

The story is set in the East African savanna, where animals struggle to find food and
later face danger when lightning causes a fire. Baboon encourages the other animals to
“think big” instead of giving up. Giraffe learns to use his long neck to reach food, Bee
finds a way to locate flowers and make honey, while Kudu eventually uses his horns to
rescue others. The animals also work together to survive the danger. This plot is
suitable for Grade 2 learners because it is exciting but understandable, and the animal
characters provide opportunities for learners to learn vocabulary, predict events and
discuss problem-solving, courage and teamwork.

The pictures are an important strength of the story because they support learners who
are still developing English proficiency. The illustrations use strong, curved lines and
clearly defined shapes to make the animals easy to recognise. Bright colours create an
energetic and playful atmosphere, while darker and more intense colours during the fire
communicate danger and fear. The texture of the savanna, trees, animals and sky adds
visual interest. The composition places characters and important events prominently in
the foreground, while different perspectives show the size and movement of the
animals. These visual elements help learners understand the meaning of unfamiliar
English words through context and encourage them to describe what they see.
